When I graduated college, it was just after the financial crisis, and graduating with a degree in finance seemed like a terrible idea in retrospect.
After exhausting on-campus interviews, applying online to far-too-many jobs, and trying to “network” my way in without success, I surprisingly landed a job at an investment firm that I had learned about at a career fair. The only problems being: 1. I hated it and 2. I barely made enough money to pay my bills.
Fast forward 2 years and I decided to get into startups. I knew I didn’t have any experience and felt strongly that applying online would NEVER help me to stand out. I also heard there were lots of jobs that were never even posted, so I physically couldn’t apply for them.
What did I do? Read a lot, tested, and trial-and-errored a wide variety of strategies that landed me on a few that proved highly effective.
My strategies landed me a great job, one that was never posted online, at a top, venture-funded tech startup where I was able to launch my career in client-facing work.
Over the years I’ve to helped myself and the others I’ve worked with, land incredible job offers at places like Amazon, Google, and a variety of top-tier startups and tech companies.
My Mom (an incredible woman) always told me “we don’t know what we don’t know”, and it really stuck with me. And the deal is, there are so many incredible people out there that have outstanding skills and knowledge, they just don’t know the strategies necessary to land the jobs they’ve always dreamed of.
